A cry signals morning Biscuit haired child Brighter than sunshine My turn, so tired Your older mothers Are gripping the sides Composure all of asunder Worn out and full of wonder One, two, three Waltzing so easily Three, two, one Two mothers under one son Worn out and full of wonder Boundlessly buoyant Hijacked canoe Attacking the oars As we take turns to snooze Bend in the river Stronger the pull Niagara just round the corner Worn out and full of wonder And with a one, two, three Waltzing so easily Three, two, one Two mothers under one son Worn out and full of wonder Solitary magpie His eye meets mine Cautious, curiously Pecks at my mind Inclement weather It’s too late to nest In spite and despite the warnings Worn out and full of wonder

Two glorious days Sun-dried grassy paths Birdsong, a thrush Returns to familiar perch The tree I can see from my window Complicated cadences sung easily All this winged to me Most days, perched up that tree More familiar than family For in that space, I am safe Branches hold me more frequently than her I don’t sing for others yet Though the caws and cries Unsanitised Claw at the carrion trapped inside Working its way through my middle age The song thrush calls

Between the lines I’m Princess & the Pea Awkward, itchy, dopey Smile and say ‘hello’ You’ll think I’ve understood Lifetime learning How to be good To pass as one of you When underneath Interaction feels like Too loud, too bright Just not quite right Everybody’s talking in riddles and rhymes I need more time To process and find She’s got her head in the clouds She’s on another planet We’re on another planet together Two loners walking side by side Not streetwise Each other’s guide To life outside the door I listen to ‘Sleep’ To dampen my brain 4 x 4 x 4 again Crawl outside the door Avoiding the eyes Drown her at birth Let her count cards Defective genius, still a child Her head’s in the clouds Neuron - neuron we collide The pathways of our minds Semibreve Outpourings of sadness Outpourings of fury, grief, anger, bright Just not quite right Everybody’s talking in riddles and rhymes I need more time

Waking up in the half light Our baby’s feet above his head Awake to a new day Matthew and Ted Heading up the back road Deep into the woods Symphonic chorus While others dream of work Familiar tread In the High North Ted’s adventure begins Whilst our son Dandles in his sling A seam of good weather Ourselves and boy take shape Ted runs unfettered Steep summits reached As our little laddie sleeps We’re all animals, searching for a lead Someone to follow home Belong and be Sun warms the trodden As we witness Ted’s last day Unable His back legs gave way Looking at his faithful friend Trusting in his gaze Tenderly carried Whilst our boy Takes his first steps any day And we talk and wonder Of this most tender of men With no need to overpower His best friend When I think of love And I ask what love is I think of Matthew and Ted Matthew and Ted

I found myself in a wood Because I could Because I couldn’t go anywhere else Little things in my head Hunker down and divide Little griefs around a fire Spreading outwards drifting far Scorching everything in sight Breathing out Our places don’t fit the bill Too much concrete, urban spill Rawtenstall to Shibden Hall Chimneys, moors and me Too industrial, so much rain Bursts of green against the grey From the window of this train Bringing us home again I realised I’m still outdoors Flat topped hills and drystone walls I am free on this burning moor River valleys with wooded sides Lunar landscape at Stoodley Pike Who decides where beauty lies Crowded peaks, or a home-made pie Mushy peas on the side When its damp outside Our places don’t fit the bill Too much concrete, urban spill Scammy Dam to Heptonstall Chimneys, moors and me Too industrial, so much rain Bursts of green against the grey From the window of this train Bringing us home again Fish n chips without the sea A hankie of sand at the reservoir Millionaires without the cash Cheers, we’re happy as we are! How the wind feels on my face All the things I cannot say All the tears I cannot mend All the tears I cannot shed Hide the feelings from myself Beneath this hug of trees I’m breathing in Our places don’t fit the bill The brutal beauty of mills and hills Black Dyke brass to Gracie Fields Chimneys, moors and me Water, grit, blood and dirt We’re the proudest folk on earth Pennines pulsing through our veins Bringing us home again

I am the keeper of secrets I keep my back to the wall I am their mother and their daughter They think I know nothing at all Assertion is aggressive Ambition a barren place Pink is our prison Language honed to subjugate A right to education Like fearless Malala I am a woman in space We've been choke chained and muted Fitted with concrete shoes Wings clipped and tethered Assembled to be consumed When we look at Earth from above Swimming in the silent sea There are no borders or limits A pale blue dot is all we see Holding it in tension Like Valentina Tereshkova Refusal to surrender Just like Rosa Parkes

Polly 04:01
Heartbeat refrain Punctuates the sky Laid in constellation Against a shifting tide Body bruised black Had to comply Polly Not what she seems Clutching at dreams Removed from the scene You pushed out five Only to find You’re the first of five In a different line Did you contemplate As a fleeting child What would end your life?
11.
All the words I write to hide The feelings others can’t abide Buried down beneath the light Is it better to be alone? Command, contain, stride, control Constant striving takes its toll Uncompromising as I am Am I afraid to fall? You’re everything they cannot see A warrior beneath the veil Of femininity The finest china made from bone You’ll be the one to carry me home We met before but not like this You lift my hand in a formal kiss Why can’t I meet your direct gaze? A crowded room demands restraint I’ve been warned from the glow So I need you to take control A fire can’t burn without its fuel It takes madness and courage to live as we do

about

O’Hooley & Tidow
‘Cloudheads’
NMCD 57
Release Date 21/04/23

Much loved Yorkshire folk duo Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow have been propelled into newfound fame for penning the theme tune to Sally Wainwright’s hit BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, earning them global admiration, an acting role for Belinda on the iconic TV drama Happy Valley, Radio 4 Woman’s Hour and concerts that sell out months in advance.

Belinda and Heidi’s boundless songwriting has been described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional’ and The Independent as ‘defiant, robust, northern, poetical, political folk music for the times we live in.’ Their first full studio album in seven years; ‘Cloudheads’ delves into the mindscapes, passions and inner worlds of two highly individual autistic women; Belinda and Heidi. Moving, melodic, dramatic and tender, from stories of parenthood, the call of a song thrush, to a portrait of the last days of a touching relationship between their neighbour Matthew and his beloved Alsatian, Ted, and even a collaboration with Gentleman Jack herself, Suranne Jones on ‘The Ballad of Anne and Ann’, they explore, consider and connect subjects and stories in a distinctive, inventive and memorable way.

Having the originality and skill to invite comparison with the most celebrated harmony duos, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson says ‘They sing together in the way families do. Normally, you only get that closeness in the voices with family bands like The Coppers or The Watersons.’

A note from Belinda & Heidi about Cloudheads.

We love this album. The brilliant Lucy Hanson designed the front cover for us and there is much to explore here. In her patchwork clouds, you will find references to the new album, plus past albums, a certain little boy and lots more.

In September 2022, we started recording our new album ‘Cloudheads’ by meeting up with BAFTA winning actress Suranne Jones and her husband Laurence at Dean Street Studios in Soho. There, we spent the day recording our tribute to Anne Lister and Ann Walker; ‘The Ballad of Anne & Ann’ with the pure voice of Suranne shining through the song. She has generously donated her fee for this to the Albert Kennedy Trust who support LGBTQI people who find themselves homeless.

In the time we had left at the end of recording the song, we managed to record four more piano pieces. We then headed to Peel House in Halifax to continue recording the album in a barn using Annie Lennox’s studio piano from her early Eurythmics days.

The piano is completely unique, with an amazing sound that we love. It brought a magical energy to the recording that we can’t wait to share with you. Despite the barn being very cold, we loved having the space and solitude to immerse ourselves completely into the recording process. The songs reflect completely what our lives have been like since Flynn was born, being parents for the first time, the pandemic, where we live, and the strong women from history that have inspired and captivated us. Also, both being diagnosed as autistic brings a neurodivergent lens to this album as we accept and love the parts of ourselves that we have struggled with over the years and allowed our voices to shine.

We’re excited about the other musicians we’ve invited to play on the album. Our friend Anna Esslemont who wrote and performed such beautiful violin parts on our first two albums including the song ‘Gentleman Jack’ has written and performed all the string parts on ‘Cloudheads’. Her arrangements are so incredibly intuitive and emotional, we can’t wait for you to hear them. Belinda wrote the cello parts for our friend and BBC Philharmonic cellist Miriam Skinner and recording her up in the loft at our house, is a treasured memory. Chumbawamba’s Jude Abbott contributed beautiful and poignant Flugelhorn to ‘Chimneys, Moors and Me’, and ‘The Ballad of Anne and Ann’.

The contemporary clarinettist Jack McNeill added atmosphere, disquiet and idiosyncratic brilliance to the album. Our mate Michele Stodart provided her unique, sensitive bass playing to many of the songs, adding electric and acoustic guitars and E-bow to some songs providing rich sonic textures that only her could think up. Hannah James from our feminist collective Coven spent a day with us playing accordion, singing and also providing feet percussion, all in our loft. She was a joy to behold.

And finally, the wonderful guitarist and singer Katie Spencer spent a day with us and brought her intuitive playing and quiet confidence to our album. It was a pleasure hearing her play, she is so talented.

Track Listing

1. WORN OUT AND FULL OF WONDER 4.09 O’Hooley/Tidow
We became parents to our son, Flynn in September 2019. The song tells you the rest…
2. LITTLE CRUMB 0.30 O’Hooley/Tidow We used to sing this ditty to our Little Crumb in my tummy at night
3. THE SONG THRUSH 3.12 O’Hooley Belinda wrote this shortly after Flynn was born, she wrote it with him fast asleep on her in his sling
4. CLOUDHEADS 4.25 O’Hooley/Tidow We were both diagnosed as autistic in November 2020. ‘Sleep’ by Max Richter is the album we have listened to every day since Flynn’s birth to help us regulate.
5. PEEL HOUSE 2.02 O’Hooley We arrived at the barn at Peel House, set up our equipment on Annie Lennox’s (!) old studio piano, I hit ‘record’ and this is what Belinda expressed to Heidi
6. MATTHEW AND TED 4.44 O’Hooley/Tidow When Flynn was only a few weeks old, we were walking near our home with him in the sling and we saw our neighbour, Matthew carrying the back legs of his beloved Alsatian, Ted, on what was his last day. The most tender moment we had ever witnessed.
7. CHIMNEYS, MOORS AND ME 4.10 O’Hooley/Tidow Commissioned during lockdown by Sue Botcherby of the South Pennines Park Trust, a self-designated national park
8. WOMAN IN SPACE 4.27 O’Hooley/Tidow Written in 2017 for our feminist collect, Coven. It was wonderful to have fellow Coven member, Hannah James to join us for this one.
9. THE ROAD TO MONALEA 4.15 O’Donnell We’ve both always loved this Irish reel by Colm O’Donnell, Belinda’s late Father’s neighbour in Co. Sligo
10. POLLY 3.59 O’Hooley/Tidow This was an interesting commission from The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce @ St Bride’s Church, London. Polly Nichols (1845 – 1888) was born 100 yards away from the church, grew up in this parish, marrying there in 1864. Her life tragically ended when she became the first of five female victims of the unknown Victorian serial killer referred to as ‘Jack the Ripper’.
11. THE BALLAD OF ANNE AND ANN 4.06 O’Hooley/Tidow After our 2012 song about Anne Lister became the tune to Sally Wainwright’s BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, so many of you asked us for a song about Ann Walker, so here it is…
12. FIACRE RYAN 3.48 O’Hooley Fiacre Ryan is the first non-verbal autistic student to sit the Irish Leaving Cert, achieving honours marks in Maths, English & History. Until the age of 13, Fiacre had no means of communicating with his family or the outside world. “The story of my life is a search for understanding and acceptance. Believe in minds that work differently,”
