about
Words & Music by O'Hooley & Tidow
This was an interesting commission from The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce @ St Bride’s Church, London. Polly Nichols (1845 – 1888) was born 100 yards away from the church, grew up in this parish, marrying there in 1864. Her life tragically ended when she became the first of five female victims of the unknown Victorian serial killer referred to as ‘Jack the Ripper’.
lyrics
Heartbeat refrain
Punctuates the sky
Laid in constellation
Against a shifting tide
Body bruised black
Had to comply
Polly
Not what she seems
Clutching at dreams
Removed from the scene
You pushed out five
Only to find
You’re the first of five
In a different line
Did you contemplate
As a fleeting child
What would end your life?

Love the complexity of this track and the rising and falling of the violins, and the texture. Makes me want to dance.
Thank you so much for this album. I really love it, and find it really inspiring my own work on the Witchcraft Trials ❤️ tararosehip

It's the hope. Through the sadness and anger at the current state of the world, Grace seems to sing hope and belief that people can, and want to, do better, and build something where we all fit. voxdumnonia
